Not yet set a New Year’s resolution? The Rescue Hotel has you covered.
With New Year’s resolutions on our minds (and our dogs by our sides), we’ve put together a few dog friendly ideas to help make this year the best one yet for both you and your pup.
1. Be a team and learn something new together
At The Rescue Hotel, our residents are learning something new every day whether that is with staff, volunteers or the behaviour team. If you are determined to learn a new skill this year, why not extend that to your dog? Learning a new trick or brushing up on basic training can be a great way to spend more quality time together. We have got some great tips on loose lead walking, which you can check out here.
Our resident Dart has been working on lots of new skills these last few months with our dedicated behaviour team, particularly surrounding improving his ability to settle. Dart has made excellent progress and has made sure to let us know that it’s a good idea to keep some exciting treats to hand during training sessions!
2. Look after each other
Our dogs show up for us everyday and we believe in showing up for them too. We know it is important to take care of our health and well-being and just like us humans, it is important that our dogs feel healthy and happy too. The Rescue Hotel are dedicated to ensuring our residents have everything they need while they are waiting for their forever home to come along, whether that be veterinary support, top-quality nutrition or an intriguing new toy. So, why not double-check if your dog is up-to-date with their routine vaccinations? Or, look at enriching their environment to keep their day a little more interesting?
3. Be more present
We may be biased, but our residents are the most photogenic pups in town. Though after a picture or two, we encourage our volunteers to put our residents first when out for walks, not their phones. Not only does this give our residents the undivided attention they deserve, but it also helps keep them safe as our volunteers are focused on what’s going on around them. After all, who else is going to keep an eye on Petal to ensure she isn’t going to sneak a Greggs sausage roll?
While this is something we are likely all guilty of, why not make an effort to be more present for your dog? Life is busy but that daily walk is probably the highlight of your dog’s entire day, so let’s put our phones away and cherish that time together.
