Celebrating National Volunteers’ Week (June 1st– 7th) at the Hotel has been a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on our incredible volunteers, who go above and beyond for our residents every single day. Whether they are arriving at 7am to walk the dogs during the heatwave or opening up their homes to foster a resident, their dedication makes a real difference.
Throughout the week, we have been sharing their stories on our social media (@therescuehotelcdh), exploring what inspired them to start volunteering and what they enjoy most about being part of our community.Â
Many of our volunteers shared that, because they are unable to have a dog of their own, spending time with our residents gives them the chance to experience the joy of canine companionship.
Sarah, who has been volunteering with us for two years, said: “I love dogs and I don’t have a suitable lifestyle to have my own so this was a good way to get my fix. I was also trying to improve my own health and get out and walk more often. Volunteering has become its own reason now though!.”
We also asked our volunteers to share a moment that made them especially proud to be part of this community. Many spoke about the pride they feel wearing their high-vis and representing the volunteering community at Cardiff Dogs Home and The Rescue Hotel.
Sara, who has been volunteering for two years, said: “I always feel proud walking the dogs with a high vis on, showing that I’m part of the volunteering family at CDH but also to hopefully show off a dog that catches someone’s eye so they can find their forever home.”
We were also delighted to welcome BBC Radio Wales presenter Molly Palmer during this week’s celebrations to chat about the many ways our volunteers support the work of Cardiff Dog’s Home and The Rescue Hotel.
