Cecilia’s Happy, Healthy New Chapter

Cecilia, now known as Cece, checked out of the Hotel a few weeks ago and is officially adjusting to life in her new home. From the moment she arrived at the Hotel through to her adoption, Cece has been on quite the health journey, but she is now much happier and healthier because of it.

Cece arrived at the Hotel as a stray and was suffering from a range of health problems. Most noticeably, her very noisy breathing indicated that she was suffering from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), a respiratory condition of flat faced dogs where they are unable to breathe properly due to their poorly bred anatomy.

Not only was Cece struggling with her breathing, but she was also suffering from dry eye, a lifelong condition where there is a decreased tear production, which can lead to eye ulcers and painful inflammation. To make matters worse, she was also in pain from a corkscrew tail, another condition common in bulldogs, where malformed vertebrae of the tail curl painfully back into the skin. This can cause infection and irritation.

We knew that Cece’s journey to better health was going to be lengthy. However, she was lucky enough to find a foster home where she could spend her recovery (little did she know she had just stepped paws into her forever home!)

The first step was to help Cece breathe easier by referring her for BOAS surgery to be funded by The Rescue Hotel, where her soft palate was shortened and her nostrils were widened. The change was immediate, and soon after her fosterers were reporting that she had a spring in her step and a new found love for exercise! Once she had recovered from her first surgery, she then returned to The Rescue Hotel Health Centre. Our on-site vet team performed surgery to amputate the painful curled section of her tail and also carried out her spay procedure.

Cece’s recovery was made easier as she was placed in a foster home from the very beginning and her foster parents were with her every step of the way. The good news is, they are still part of Cece’s journey as they decided to officially adopt her!

We have spoken with Cece’s new parents to see how she is settling into her new life and they have assured us she is doing very well. Cece has assumed the role of the head of the house, but they would not have it any other way!

Here is what else they had to say;

“The most rewarding part of Cece’s settling in process has to be seeing her come out of her shell. She was pretty timid when we first had her but her full cheeky side has come out now, she’s firmly part of the family.

We are really looking to seeing even more of Cece’s cheeky side coming out and seeing her confidence rebuild day by day”

Thanks to your donations and support, The Rescue Hotel was able to step in and fund Cece’s life-saving surgeries, giving her not just a second chance at life, but the opportunity to find the loving home she deserves.
